Birra Technologies secures $1.4M Grant to build pre-commercial pilot
Birra Technologies has been awarded $1.4 million under Round 17 of the Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centres Projects (CRC-P) grant program. As part of a $2.8 million industry-led project, this funding will support the design and construction of a pre-commercial pilot facility in collaboration with our project partners.
Leveraging the deep biogas expertise of The University of Queensland (UQ), the practical operational experience and feedstock supply of Urban Utilities (UU), and the infrastructure capability of one of the world’s largest marine fuel suppliers, this project will demonstrate how Birra Technologies’ solution integrates seamlessly across the entire biogas-to-fuel value chain.
Birra Technologies’ proprietary platform is the world’s only modular, solar-powered biogas-to-green-methanol process, enabling greater than 50% cost reductions compared with current green-methanol suppliers. By addressing the key cost, access and supply-chain bottlenecks slowing the maritime sector’s decarbonisation, this technology has the potential to help abate over 1 gigatonne of CO₂-equivalent emissions annually—all without a green premium, even amid regulatory uncertainty.
“We thank the Australian Government for its continued support, as well as our project partners for their leadership and collaboration. This CRC-P will accelerate our pathway to commercial demonstration and unlock a scalable, cost-competitive future for green methanol,” said Dr. Jamin Wood, CEO of Birra Technologies.
Incoming Lead Chemist Dr. Rashid Siddique, who will oversee pilot-scale catalyst manufacturing, added:
“This grant enables us to scale MOF catalyst production into territory rarely attempted globally. It allows us to refine our novel photocatalyst, optimise stability and performance, and ultimately deliver the materials platform that underpins Birra’s breakthrough in low-cost green methanol.”
